  1. No Drugs and Alcohol - If we find a teen using or suspect use, we will call his/her parents to pick him/her up.  If an adult is found to be or suspected to be using drugs or is blatantly abusing alcohol, we will also ask him/her to go home.  Adults have agreed (as per the safe environment compliance form) not to drink alcohol during the trip.

  2. Curfew- 9:00 PM  -  Both teens and adults must be in the VFW by this time every night.  (Consensus among the adults is needed).  Phone call in the parking lot permitted until 10 PM.

  3. No one goes off alone, and no one goes anywhere without  an adult knowing where they are.

  4. No one goes over or on the bridges.  No jumping off the bridges into the river.

  5. If the river is too strong, no swimming.

  6. No swimming at night no matter what.

  7. Everyone helps out with cooking and cleanup.  (Make yourself breakfast)

Pandemic Policies

  1. All fully vaccinated volunteers are NOT required to wear masks or social distance indoors or outdoors.  Essentially, they can be what I call “common sense normal,” meaning they can function without taking too many precautions unless common sense dictates that they should.  Most volunteers are fully vaccinated, but all should bring their masks just in case.

  2. Week 1 is fully vaccinated except for one person who will be partially vaccinated.  Week 2 has only one person who will be unvaccinated.  Week 3 has four unvaccinated volunteers.  Week 4 has only one unvaccinated volunteer.

  3. The partially vaccinated and unvaccinated volunteers have been given the option to forgo the requirement of masking and social distancing indoors as long as they agree to take a rapid Covid test every morning as well as on the morning of the Day of Departure to WV.  All have agreed to opt for this.

  4. All partially vaccinated and unvaccinated volunteers are asked to avoid indoor spaces where they may come in contact with the general public (i.e. Walmart, Hardware store, etc.).  If they must enter an indoor space with the general public, they will be required to wear masks and social distance.  If in a restaurant, they may remove their mask only when they are seated and not within six feet of people outside their own group.  All work crews are encouraged to have lunch outside if possible.

  5. An isolation procedure has been put in place for those who test positive for the virus.  Details of the procedure will be sent to all the unvaccinated volunteers and their families.

  6. Because of the daily testing, we will no longer need to set up tents in the parking lot to dine.

  7. All air mattresses will be at least 10 feet apart.  (Exception made for the fully vaccinated adult-only sleep space in the bar area).

  8. If you are a fully vaccinated volunteer and are uncomfortable with any of the above regarding your own personal safety, even with the daily testing, please let me know privately and we will make special arrangements that address your concerns.

  9. Most if not all work will be outdoors.  We may accept an indoor job if the resident(s) is/are fully vaccinated or if the indoor work is sealed off from the rest of the house (i.e. an addition with it’s own entrance/exit).  For the protection of those whom we serve, unvaccinated and partially vaccinated volunteers will not be permitted to work indoors if there is a chance that they could come in prolonged contact with the homeowner(s) while inside.

  10. All are asked to continue using good hand hygiene.

  11. Sanitizing surfaces in the VFW and in the cars will be no different than our normal cleaning procedures unless a driver chooses to go beyond those procedures in his/her vehicle.  Sanitizing products will be provided.

  12. All volunteers, whether fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated or unvaccinated are welcome to continue to wear masks and social distance if that is their preference.

  13. The above policy has been designed so that we can safely include all who want to participate in the Appalachia Help Weeks 2021.  No policy is fool-proof, but we believe that what we have put in place is reasonable and uses common sense.  However, we reserve the right to amend this policy should local and/or national circumstances change at any time.
